Social determinants and Oxidative stress among Elderly patients with Cardiovascular diseases – Two facets of the same Matter

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death worldwide, and its prevalence is predicted to rise exponentially in the coming years. There is a complex interplay between underlying health determinants that could trigger pathophysiological abnormalities leading to disease development. This article focuses on the two-way relationship between oxidative stress (OS) and social determinants in the development of CVD.

It is becoming increasingly clear that socioeconomic factors play a major role in CVD development. Additionally, numerous research studies have shown that disadvantageous social factors can trigger an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Our knowledge of harmful ROS (hROS) has evolved in recent decades, providing well-documented evidence of their role—such as peroxynitrite, hypochlorite, and hydroxyl radicals—in endothelial dysfunction, vascular complications, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, and stroke.

On the other hand, social determinants represent another facet of the same issue. Recent data emphasize the capacity of social determinants and social structures to influence CVD development. Moreover, the dynamic nature of how the social environment affects disease progression necessitates an in-depth investigation.

As a consequence, to properly address the rising prevalence of CVD, both pathophysiological and social aspects should be equally considered.
